About My Hollands
I run a very small rabbitry in California's San Joaquin Valley. Being small, I can give more attention to my bunnies than if I had dozens of rabbits. Each has it's own unique personality. They are gentle, calm, affectionate and funny. I give my Hollands excellent care, with high quality feed, fresh herbs and hay. My herd is all pedigreed.
Rabbit Care Info
Make sure cage is big enough for your bunny.
I use 30" by 30" cages. Also, make sure that bunny has a foot resting pad to sit on. Without one, rabbit may likely develop sores on feet, which is called, sore hock. This develops from sitting on wire cage bottom.
Keep cages clean!
Clipping nails
Feed timothy or orchard hay every day.
When transitioning to different feeds.
Clip nails about every two months. Don't clip to the red part. That's where the blood begins. Clipping is very necessary.
When you bring your bunny home, make sure you mix 50% of my feed with 50% your feed. Then after five or six days, slowly decrease my feed with your feed. That way, bunny will get use to it and it's easier on the digestive system.
This is absolutely necessary! To much ammonia buildup can cause respiratory problems and flies.
Rabbits get hairballs like cats. However, unlike cats, they cannot cough it up. Hay is high in fiber and helps rabbits pass the hair through the digestive system. Also, having hay to chew keeps teeth from getting to long. Do not use alfalfa hay. It is high in protein and to rich. My rabbits tend to like the orchard hay best.
Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother)
This is a very good practice to use. I pour 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar per quart or liter into rabbits' drinking water. It helps fight against parasites, urinary tract support, food or hay that happened to be moldy(and you didn't realize it) and overall good health. I always put it in their drinking water. Don't over dose though. Always do some of your own research.
Herbs
Three main herbs that I like to give my rabbits are parsley, oregano and rosemary. I grow them in my garden, because fresh is best and it's easy to access. If your bunny is not eating, parsley is a good thing to give him. It helps with digestion disorder, urinary problems and circulation. If any of my rabbits haven't eaten much in the night, I go grab a few sprigs of parsley and oregano. Oregano helps in similar problems and inflammation. The first herb my rabbits prefer is the parsley.
Ice packs or frozen water bottles
If your rabbit is not in indoor air conditioning, in the summertime, you need to give him an ice pack or frozen water bottle to cool down. I give each of my rabbits an ice pack every afternoon in hot temperatures. Also, make sure he has plenty of cool water to drink. This is where an open bowl is great. Rabbits drink large amounts in summer. Make sure he is in total shade. Maybe wet down a gunny sack or towel and throw over part of his cage. You don't want your bunny to have heat stress.
F. A. Q.
Do you deliver or ship?
No, I do not. Pick up only. It takes up a lot of time delivering.
How should I pick up my rabbit?
Put one hand under the front "arm pits" and the other hand on the rump. Lift in this fashion. Do not pick them up by their ears. If grabbed by the ears, rabbits can start thrashing around and break their own necks.
Why did my rabbit stop eating?
Possibly by switching to a new food to quickly. You must start out very gradual, by slowly mixing new food in with old food.
Also, food may have gone bad (like moldy) or it was bad, fresh from the store. If you get a fresh bag of feed and your bunny won't touch it, don't starve him into eating it. More than likely, there is something wrong with the feed. I use high quality, no grain Purina's show feed from Tractor Supply. One time, I happened to open a brand new bag of food and none of my rabbits would eat it. It was the same brand I always use, but something was wrong with it. I threw it into the garden, and got a new bag. My bunnies started eating it just fine.
Give your bunny fresh parsley. This can help straighten out stomach problems.
Do you use venmo or PayPal?
No, I do not. Cash only. Please don't ask to use these other pay methods. I ONLY do cash.
